The Specials

The Specials are extremely significant in my research into the genre and video production as they are a renowned underground music (2tone) band who target their audience perfectly, and, are influences of 'Smaller Than You'.

'GHOST TOWN' VIDEO:
Although this video is very dark and noir almost monochrome, it is very good for shots that we can use. I really like the opening, showing the overpowering city and starting in someone’s point of view, tracking them. It reminds me of the music video of Africa Shox By Left Field, where it immediately sets the location of New York. This video and the Specials Ghost Town both create a dystopic city with their music and representation of the location with their shots. These videos are very good with the visuals to the location, but we are aiming for a utopic representation of the city. Although the music we are using is Ska and upbeat like The Specials, we are hoping to create a vibrant up beat video. We are going to start of at the location of Sound Clash, which is an independent music store which sells tickets and music catering fans for an alternative, underground, reggae and old skool music scene produced on independent labels. Norwich which is a generic feature of our video. The shots used in Ghost Town vary from very low to very high, creating a dominating side of the city which represents the lyrics with the visuals. We are going to experiment with the angles used in this video, as we are interested in iconic and cultural aspects of Norwich in our music video, which reinforces its location and music rootes.

I wanted to research more into the genre The Specials, as they are a renowned talented Ska band with a vast range of different audiences.
I browsed on The Specials Myspace to find their audience was primarily males starting from young fans of 16 to The Specials generation of 49. Most of them were genric to the genre with tattoos, beards and from looking on all the commenter’s profiles came from all parts of the world. The female audience ranged form 19 to early twenties but as there were only 4 public comments on the first two pages it was quite hard to find the audience demographic. From Myspace and Youtube I learnt that their audience is male dominated, which could be from the style of the music, to the sex of the band also. This shows their music and style would be targeted towards males primarily. This research goes back to my questionnaire, which from my results show that males use the internet more for socialising and finding new music. The males in my questionnaire were more interested in music and use the internet more for this aspect, for example Itunes, Youtube and Myspace reinforcing this statement.

-“what an amazing band, we are looking for bands to help save lives and relieve suffering, cheers” - a comment from a fan.

This picture was from a boy who commented on The Specials homepage saying how great they were and even his display picture is of himself with the lead singer himself Jerry Dammers. The boy was 16 and from Edinburgh and interestingly resembled the image of a generic punk-Ska lover with a big Mohawk, leather jacket with the sides of his head shaved. The picture below shows the resemblance of the two images, showing how this image hasn’t been changed for the bands audience and still provides the same messages from the music to them. This also could show the generic stereotyping in genre’s and how some people are making a statement through their clothing and are trying to identify themselves with a certain ideology, style, or music etc. This very obviously shows The Specials primary target audience, which is till the same from back in the day to present.
